Advice For Hiring The Right Moving Company

There’s no question that moving can be a stressful experience. Many people are scammed each year by unethical moving companies. If you’re unprepared, it can quickly turn into an expensive headache. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to ensure you hire the right residential moving services in Ottawa.

DON’T…

Don’t hire without checking credentials

Unfortunately, it is easy for any business to create a website whether they are reputable or not. Make sure the company is BBB-accredited. It should also meet the standards set by the Canadian Association of Movers (C.A.M.), a committee is made up of experts and consumer rights advocates in the moving industry.

Don’t hire a moving broker

Moving brokers often advertise as movers, but they are really just brokers. These individuals will search for customers online and then hire out the job to movers. According to the C.A.M., moving brokers don’t take responsibility for the level of service delivered, leaving you in a bind if something goes wrong.

Don’t rely on a moving company that uses subcontractors.

Some residential moving services hire subcontractors to drive the truck or move your belongings. Because they are not employees of the company, subcontractors may not follow the same policies or guidelines. Your movers should be permanent employees of the moving company you choose to hire.

DO…

Do ask for references

Find out which moving companies your friends and neighbors have had good experiences with during their moves.  Local real estate agents can also be a good resource. Then research the moving companies at consumer websites online such as the Better Business Bureau.

Do get an in-house estimate

Never get a moving estimate over the phone. For an estimate to be accurate, it needs to be done at your home so the movers can inspect your belongings. Show the movers everything you need moved and find out how much it would be to add items at the last minute. It is helpful to make an inventory of all of your belongings ahead of time.

Do get a quote in writing

According to the Office of Consumer Affairs for Industry Canada, the contract should be on company letterhead and include the address and telephone number of the moving company. It should only include a full quote of the number, size, and value of all boxes and explain the terms of payment.  Never sign an incomplete document.

If you want more information about protecting yourself when hiring residential moving services in Ottawa, the Office of Consumer Affairs published the Consumer Checklist for Choosing a Moving Company to help citizens select professional movers.
