Where our long-distance movers go
A long-distance move, for us, is any move that leaves the Ottawa region. We move households and businesses across Ontario, to Quebec and the Maritimes, and across Canada. We also handle moves from Ottawa to the United States.
Moving between Ottawa and Toronto, in either direction? That route has its own page. Our Google reviews include moves from Ottawa to Toronto and to Halifax.
Why a long-distance move needs a different plan
Once the truck leaves Ottawa, nobody can run back for a forgotten box, so everything has to be packed, loaded and secured for hours of highway.
So we plan the load. Fragile items are packed with quality materials, furniture is padded, and the truck is loaded so nothing shifts in transit. Oversized pieces are taken apart before they travel and put back together when they arrive.
You hear from us from the first quote to the final delivery, with updates along the way.
How our long-distance moving process works
The same steps on every long-distance move:
1. Consultation and quote
We go through the details of your move and give you a clear quote that sets out the services and the costs.
2. Packing, loading and transport
On moving day we pack and load your things with protective materials, and handle the logistics of the trip.
3. Unloading and setup
At the new home we unload, put furniture back together and help arrange it the way you want.
4. Storage if the dates don't match
If the new home isn't ready when you leave Ottawa, your things can wait in storage first.
Moving from Ottawa to the United States
We move households from Ottawa to the United States as well as within Canada. A cross-border move adds customs paperwork to the usual plan.
When household goods enter the United States separately from their owner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection takes the declaration on CBP Form 3299, the Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles. Check CBP's current rules for your situation, and tell us your destination when you call so the plan allows for the border.
Packing for a long-distance move
Long trips are hard on loosely packed boxes. Our packing services get your home packed for the trip, and we bring the boxes and tape. For everything else that goes into a home move, see residential moving.

Questions about moving with TLC
Is long-distance moving expensive?
It costs more than a local move because of the distance, the time on the road and the size of the load, and packing or storage add to it if you need them. We price each move after reviewing it. The estimate is free and carries no obligation.
How far is considered a long-distance move?
For TLC, any move that leaves the Ottawa region: elsewhere in Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, the rest of Canada or the United States.
How far in advance should I book long-distance movers?
As soon as you have a date. A long-distance move has more to arrange than a local one, and the estimate is free, so nothing is lost by starting early.
What is the best way to do a long-distance move?
Keep it with one company from the quote to the setup, get the quote in writing, and pack fragile things properly or have them packed for you. If your dates don't line up, book storage early rather than on moving day.
Do you move to the United States?
Yes. We move from Ottawa to the United States as well as across Canada. Tell us the destination when you call (613) 830-7402.
